USAF A-1E SKYRAIDER

Historical Note:    With it's huge four-bladed propeller hanging out in front, the Skyraider had enormous lifting capacity. It was used extensively in Vietnam for it's flexible weapons load and endurance to loiter for long periods of time over the battlefield.

The Skyraider is the first single seat torpedo and dive bomber that served the Navy. The Douglas Aircraft built 3,180 Skyraiders for the Navy, one of the variants produced was the A-1E Skyraider. During the World War II, Douglas proposed a design to the US Navy for the replacement of SBD dive bomber. The A-1E Skyraider made its first flight on March 1945 and for the next twelve years; Douglas persistently improved the A-1E Skyraider.

The USAF altered the Navy’s AD-5 and redesignated it to A-1E in 1963. The A-1E Skyraider has the ability to carry large bomb loads, absorb heavy ground fire and fly for long periods at low altitude. The A-1E Skyraider was absolutely suited for close support missions.
