HISTORICAL NOTE:    This Gustav (as the G model 109 was referred to by those who flew and maintained them) was attached to the 7th Staffel of JG53. The squadron was based in Sciacca, Italy in the Summer of 1943.  At the time, it was flown by Unteroffizier Georg Amon, who had a total of 9 victories at the time he was shot down by anti-aircraft fire on April 2nd of 1944. He was injured in the incident and was captured. He spent the last few months of WWII as a prisoner of war.

7th Staffel of JG53 was quite unique in having large, colorful personalized artwork painted on their airplanes, which was not a very common practice in the Luftwaffe in WWII. They all featured an Ace of Spades character involved in various activities. On Amon’s aircraft, the cartoon shows the Ace of Spades in a sailboat, probably because Amon had a love of sailing or had previously worked onboard ships. Seeman is the German word for Sailor.  With its tight white spiral painted spinner and its colorful artwork, Seeman is one of the most striking of all the Bf-109Gs.
